As far back as 1960 since independence, Nigeria has being in search of quality leaders, leaders that understands the kernel of quality leadership and it's benefits to a country as large as ours, leaders that are ready to make sacrifice at all cost to redefine the notion that people have towards politics, politicians and policy making and etcetera.
Often times, I ask myself, how come we are still captives of our own selves? our so called leaders are even worse than our colonial masters, they went as far as defining politics to be a game in which the best liar wins, to make politics a game of self interest where there is no permanent friends, but, only a permanent interest. How then can we live together as one? when we have been engulfed in what I call ethno-religious sphere. Where did we get it wrong? this should be the question that we the youths need to make an in depth systematic investigation on, let's take a trip into the past to trace the roots of the problems we are facing today, because,a problem in which the cause is not known, failure in solving such problem is inevitable; and lets come up with not just theoretical algorithm on how the problems can be solved, but, an implementable and a well-defined step by step process.
I am not writing this article to gain popularity or better still to be seeing as a leader and besides, every youths in this country should be concerned about the state of the nation; from the high rate of inflation, unemployment, high level of illiteracy to the high level of terrorism and the worst of it, political criminals being arrested for show off without due prosecution but, always granted freedom on plea bargain as long as they can afford a SAN, of-course,they all can afford to pay for the service of a high profile lawyer, after all, the bill is just infinitesimal compared to the huge amount they stole and still stealing.
What makes me cry the most is that the youths who are supposed to be the "leaders of tomorrow" which I believe that "tomorrow " we have being hearing/talking about is now, apparently, have allowed themselves to be used as political thugs, and the worst of it, is those at the students union level precisely the National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS) are now the major tools of division and political thuggery; at the level of NANS currently, there are two factions : the comr. Haruna Kadiri lead faction and the comr. Chinonso Obasi lead faction who recently lead a protest to the National Assembly for not being recognized, which logically implies, we have refused to deviate from the wrong path our political "jagabans" have shown us, which will continue to lead us to disunity.
I see leadership, precisely, political positions as something that should be sacrificial, politicians should be like Jesus Christ who was sent to save the world from destruction according to the Bible and not to see politics as a do or die affair that we have to go as far making blood sacrifices in quest to occupy political offices. That clearly shows such people lacks the interest of those they claim(ed) they are serving at heart.
What we simply need is a redefinition which begins with you and I, that is the youths. We need good leaders who can offer us quality leadership, why not prepare ourselves and be ready to be the kind of leaders we want others to be, if we all can be good, believe me, the government won't be bad, apparently, those in government were once dreamers, if they were actually ready to be the kind of leaders they were clamoring for in those days, we won't be in such a mess today.
Personally, as a youth and as an advocate of one Nigeria, I have this strong believe that the problems of Nigeria will only come to an end, when we stop seeing ourselves as Muslims and Christians, or as Hausas and Igbos but, simply as Nigerians just as it is in some well developed countries of the world.
My sincere advice to us all is to keep away all sentiments and not to see politics as a game that is being played on the field of sentiments; let's make it a concerted effort to bring that change we desire to our great country Nigeria and always remember this trend #ChangeBeginsWithMe, in as much as we may have not seen any good in this current government, the #ChangeBeginsWithMe initiative is something we should always remember in our day to day dealings or rather activities.
I hope and i'm praying fervently that we all come out en masse in subsequent elections to elect the kind of leaders we desire into various offices.
And always remember,"The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things."– President Ronald Reagan.
